BITS AND PIECES: summer lovin'

Listening: i went to this music seminar the other day and the speaker said something like.. if you enjoy music you have to listen to more than one genre (i knew that). so lots of tunes i don't usually listen to are on my playlist at the moment. i'm giving trance a try, starting with paul van dyk, ATB, and tiësto. and to reward my open-mindedness i dance to joy division, just like the wombats do!

Watching: went to see UP in 3D on premier night (taiwan premier that is), makes me go awwwwwww <3 also, finally watched trainspotting the movie and revolutionary road. i really want to hurry the effff up and finish watching season 2 of flight of the conchords but just can't seem to find the time.

Wearing: feeling uninspired these days, maybe i should go shopping.

Reading: darkly dreaming dexter by jeff lindsay. no, not the showtime original series, but the actual book. i haven't read a novel for the longest time and find this read quite enjoyable. the character dexter is totally growing on me! such an enjoyable sociopath.

Wanting: my black hair back. weird.

On My Mind: i really am so enjoying this nasty sweltering taipei city august. NOT!

Field Music - She Can Do What She Wants

i wasn't too sure about them at first because their sound is hard to pin down. i listened to more of their tunes and now convinced that they are avant garde and catchy at the same time. what a combination. too bad the band is hibernating, i can't wait for them to come back. btw, field music says i can do what i want. woop!

i hope someone will tell me that he loves me more than being seventeen too. julian casablancas (the lead vocal) is coming out with his solo album soon and i'm quite excited. go listen to more of the strokes because they are pretty awesome!

i've been listening to architecture in helsinki for the longest time, but it wasn't until i saw this video that i fell in love with them. it's just absolutely bizarre to see a bunch of australian hippie nerds in brightly colored ponchos jumping on trampolines. how weird are they lol?

i've had a lot of things rattling around in my brain to write about lately, but these days there seems to be so many other things which need doing i just can't find the dedicated time to write. i know this blog has been relatively quiet compared to those earlier ones of multiple posts per week. i'm still glad i've kept it around. surprisingly, there even seem to be a few of you who still come around to see what's going on. and i love you to bits for that.

i'm trying to stay organic and eco-friendly ever since i arrived, but it is not an easy task here. i mean you do see people using re-useable shopping bags, but it seems like no one here buys organic shampoo and conditioner because i can't find them anywhere. maybe i just don't know where to look, but even if they do sell them they are probably expensive. i might as well switch to bi-carb soda and vinegar for my hair, cheap, accessible, and even more earth friendly. i heard they work wonders too.

speaking of hair, i miss wearing my beret all the time. i miss knitting too, but it's way too hot. i bet i'm not the only one who misses winter these days. i'm definitely a winter person, no arguments there.

i stress myself out needlessly sometimes over trying to discover or uncover what i want in life. the problem stems from the assumption that i'll want the same thing forever. maybe i don't need to discover what i want forever, i just need to discover what i want at the moment. but then i started thinking, if i don't think about the future then what's the point of thinking in the first place? geez i don't make fok all sense. sometimes i wonder if i'm qualified to be an adult.

it's scary, but i think i might be going off caffeine. i havent had a coffee for three days so i just made myself a black filter. and i've been working on the same cup for three hours. in the past, i could finish one in minutes. maybe it's because hazelnut cream flavoured coffee beans from seattle's best tastes totally weird?

i feel like writing more often these days. see you soon x

i saw chevolution at the taipei film festival this week. it is a documentary about che guevara, the argentine revolutionary who helped make the cuban revolution happen with castro. it examines how he crossed path with alberto korda, a fasion photographer who took the famous picture of guevara, that became the basis for the icon we know today (photo above). and also the phenomenon surrounding the picture, the fact that his face appearing on everything from posters to cigarette packs to t-shirts nowadays.

there's this song in the documentary that really caught my attention. some people have no idea who che guevara is, but most likely know what he looks like. everyone knows that he's a symbol of something, but just not quite sure what. the song mocks those who blindly wear che guevara t-shirts but have no idea what they stand for. it is from an australian band called the clap. and here is the video.

i thought the documentary is quite well done. but if you are keen on learning more about che guevara's life, watch the motorcycle diaries instead, to learn about his trip throughout latin america, and why he transformed into who he was. there's also che: part one and two which came out last year and gave a very detailed story on pretty much his whole life.

this is what i'm listening to today. i never really paid much attention to his music until i heard this song with the most awesome lyrics. i think i would do well in the late '60s /early '70s.

right, stuff. lots of word-worthy stuff has happened recently but by the time i get to sit down and write about it i just don't want to anymore.

i think i just might be the biggest brat out there to be bitching about this city. how is that there are always so many people around you, but you still feel so foking alone? am i to need more time to get used to this place or do i simply not belong?

we all explore concepts and things that interest us, and at the same time we also explore inside of ourselves. but i feel like the more i explore the more confused i get.

i do try to make the best of my stay though. i see lots of wonderful people and have lots of laughs. i visit some of the prettiest places and lose myself in them. with a new guitar on my back =)

so i said goodbye to the guitar last night. believe it or not, this morning i woke up feeling a little lost. now i have to go pick out another guitar and try to get used to it. but at least this time it will be mine =) until i find the new guitar i have a harmonica to keep me busy!

manchester orchestra last week was rad. my favourite songs weren't on the set list and it bummed me out a little. 4 bands played that night, and i really really liked fun. such happy tunes and happy people. i think mr. eru and mr. anal dig audrey sessions more. by the time we got the drinks and settled in, the first band already finished playing so i guess i can't really comment on them.

me and some friends had a little bbq/bonfire few nights ago and it was a lot of fun. we took some really awesome pictures too! i wish i could share more personal pictures with you guys, but that would involve my friends and i can't really post them on here (okay i still do sometimes), but if you are keen there is always facebook.

i met up with the girls at bin 942 for dinner last night. i would have share pictures if patty had sent them to me =P anyways, it was great fun as always, lots and lots of laughs. i think i'm really gonna miss these great dinners with dessert afterwards (ALWAYS dessert afterwards lol).

this is going to be my last post in vancouver for awhile as i'm leaving yet again. to be honest, i'm not ready to leave and i'm not entirely sure if i want to. i do look forward to going places again and possibly starting a new life, but i've had a great year back home and met such wonderful people, maybe i don't want to lose that. but i guess i'll have to carry on sooner or later. lots of love and kisses to those who made my year x

- i stumbled upon a few travel-writing blog posts about greece. and thought to myself, of all the tourists, no one (even if there are, only a few) can ever experience greece as we experienced it, and no one loves her like we do. i'm being a total snob but that was how i felt.

by the way, did you know that twitter is ruining our moral values? twitter is hardening our hearts, we hear all the terrible things that are going on in the world in short text versions which makes us not reactful. by only reacting on a surface level, that in time, makes us cold. read this! and that is exactly why i don't use twitter and therefore bug you with a very random and unorganized blog post instead! (now i feel even lame-r having to justify my action with a scientific finding!) i do use facebook though, but that only means i lose half of my moral values and that's totally fine with me. it's not like i have a whole lot to begin with.

TREE HUGGER: happy earth day!

we all know that planting a tree in your backyard is a popular way of celebrating earth day each spring. since our backyard is already a forest (literally) full of tress of different sizes, i planted some italian parsley indoor instead. i'm not exactly sure if this will do much good for the environment, but at least its organic. and i was told that this garden-in-a-bag can be transplanted to a pot or even your garden.

i got this at anthropologie on my road trip to LA. i think it is one of the most fabulous shop i have ever been to!

this is what happens in about a week. the seeds sprout!

i just took this picture. it's only been about 10 days! i can't wait to put my home-grown italian parsley in my pasta! yummmmmm!

i'm not addicted to these sort of fb/myspace games. it just happened that adam tagged me for this a few days ago and i thought this is even more awesome than the last one!

i must confess that i did not own an ipod until last year. i was oddly and strangely really anti-apple. something got to me and now i have an inherited blue-ish nano named lollapalooza the awesome-ness, soon to be lollapalooza meyers. i'm rather fond of the future mrs. jonathan rhys meyers and always feeding her the best stuff out there.

i guess if we don't take the lyrics into consideration, this is a pretty nice song to road trip with, maybe write some summer songs while i'm away too. woop!

Flashback: razorlight, "in the morning"
wow! if my life really were this movie, i must be a very fucked up person. i mean i don't get what exactly this song is about, but it's definitely got something to do with getting shit-faced, sex/prostitution, or maybe even pete doherty.

i have been back for a year. holy crap. where has the year gone? time surely flies, don't it?

as much as i hate to put you through one of those life journey and soul searching bullcrap, i'm gonna. you are more than welcome to move on to another blog that is more interesting and filled with real contents, or hell go chomp the ears off some chocolate bunnies because it's easter time. but if you're stubborn and do decide to stay, be warned. i'm going to be self-absorbed and totally obnoxious.

here it goes.

i don't think i miss england as much as i'm suppose to. i mean i still have moments where i miss my life in oxford like crazy, but those nostalgic feelings for the year in england sure have faded. though i do miss many people i met over there. every time i look at pictures from my year abroad, that life of mine felt so familiar, yet so distant, and with so many memories attached.

as calm and laid-back as i am these days, i have toughen up and grew balls (as my brother put it, but not literally of course). many people around me don't seem to like that. too bad because i love it. and to be completely honest, i'm too chill to give a rat's ass if its to people's liking or not. sometimes my own chill-ness amazes me, seriously, i'm worried that nothing is going to excite me anymore, and that i'm going to feel disaffected all the time. i think i miss those self-deprecation, self-loathing and general lack of self-confidence dramas a little.

i play guitars now. one of the things i started this year. why? because i refuse to wait around for a scruffy bloke who plays guitar and holds my hand to miraculously show up and fall madly in love with me. i'm going to take care of the guitar part myself so a scruffy bloke who holds my hand but doesn't play guitar can miraculously show up and fall madly in love with me. no, seriously, i started learning because i've always wanted to. and if you have a guitar instructor as cute as justin, why not? anyways, for a beginner, i'm weirdly good. my own goodness blows my own mind. no actually i'm lying. sure like to hope so though.

i made a couple (or three) not-so-new friends in the past year, the not-so-new part is because we have been friends for ages but never really got to know each other all that well. but we did and i'm glad. i seem to have a problem telling them just how special their friendships mean to me. mainly because these things sound totally lame if you say them out loud. but also it was one of those things that came easily, not a result of time, compromise, or pretentiousness. it came so naturally it's funny to call it precious. for those lovelies who have always been there for me, i want you to know that i'm beyond grateful, even though i don't always say it.

it's been a very interesting year really. i sort of reconnected with different stages of my life and reconciled with a few people. i got my closures and also gave some. so i was told, as you grow up you start to get a sense of who/what is good for you, and who/what's not. it turned out to be totally true, no joke. having said that, i really hate smugs these days, i think smugs should stop being smugs, especially when you don't have what it takes to be one, stop it! i beg of you to just fucking stop it already.

this year i also realized how incredibly stupid and blind one can be when it comes to relationships. sometimes people have no idea what they want and what they are doing. they lose themselves in relationships, or what they called "love". but it's not like i haven't got my ends all mixed up the whole year. i guess we all can't help it. i mean it's just so hard to confidently possess your own mind when you are swept off your feet. is that why they called it "head over heels"? ahhhhh a moment of realization is always awesome.

new york was a nice way to mark the end of this year. i think i really liked new york, especially brooklyn. more on new york in a later post.

i apologize for subjecting everybody to random pictures and a stupid long-ass rant on my past year. sorry if i bored you. but i did warn you, didn't i?

BITS AND PIECES: mental blogging block

while there was so much i wanted to post about this week, i somehow found myself in this mental blogging block and just couldn't write. so excuse the point form.

+ i already miss los angeles, but can't freaking wait for new york. oh i haven't mentioned my trip have i? yes i will be in new york next week, which is damned exciting. i'm the luckiest girl on the west coast (or am i not?) and i can't help but rub it in a little.

+ if you haven't seen flight of the conchords you should because you're missing out. kiwis' are so in these days! bret (one of the guys in the show) has a creepy hotness to him now that he has facial hair.

+ been having trouble falling asleep lately and i still blame that movie little children, starring kate winslet and patrick wilson, for it. the scene where ronnie jerked off in that sweet girl's car totally creeped me out.

+ it's official. of montreal is on my favourite bands ever list.

+ new want: a spanish guitar, okay i know i said i wanted a daisy rock not long ago, so what? maybe i want both.

+ as i was flipping through the channels last night (i couldn't sleep and was not in the mood to read), i stumbled upon this movie called cellular, which i watched on DVD with my cousin like 4 years ago. and there he was, my ex-rugged-good-looking-in-a-weird-way-infatuation/imaginary-lover jason statham, as the bad guy. i can't believe i didn't notice him back in 2004. this totally can be added to the long list of shitty movies he's done. i mean i love the guy i still do, but come on! you have got to man up and do one decent film.

went to see glasvegas at richard's on richards earlier this month.

carl barat from the libertines and dirty pretty things was suppose to be the special guest. we were told outside the venue that he wasn't going to show up =( i was really disappointed because i pretty much went to the concert to see him.

anyways, glasvegas proved to be worthy of all the buzz after all. wicked show at a great venue. other than the visually invisible drummer and the missing carl barat, i enjoyed it thoroughly.

i don't know why i have not yet talked about placebo. they are one of my favourite rock bands ever. and probably the most interesting.

i love the fact that the three major members all have different sexual orientation. Olsdal is homosexual, Hewitt is heterosexual (though he did leave the band last year), and Molko is bisexual. the only member they're missing now is a pansexual on percussion lol.

they are from oxford, england, where i lived and worked for a year! their first full length album came out just before i left oxford to come home. brad scored anthea a copy of their cd from this dj at a club. he was drunk at the time of course. what did you think?

earlier this year, they were high on everybody's list of bands to watch in 2008, but the hype did seem to die down soon after. i will admit that you may get tired of their tunes pretty quickly because of the repetitiveness of the lyrics and the similar concept used in many of their songs. not to mention the whiny vocals. however, as the members have claimed, they are different from all the other bands from oxford. at least the "sounding spacey" bit.

although not one of their big hits, this here is my favourite from them =D

listening to the tea party these couple of days, i figured i ought to talk about the great canadian music scene that's going on.

although i'm a sucker for british bands myself, i have to admit that it has been an incredible few years for canadian music.

i really don't know that much about canadian music, so maybe give that a google, you will get lots of hits and information. while you are doing that, i'm just gonna throw bunch of my favorites at you. but of course, no mainstream stuff like nickelback, simple plan, or our lady peace, not even bedouin soundclash.

i absolutely love wolf parade and metric. wolf parade is from montreal, and metric is from toronto!

more well-known bands like arcade fire, broken social scene, and tokyo police club, have all been doing well these years, hitting it big with impressive albums really. to me they are pretty close to mainstream, just not as over-played on the radio.

pony up! and tegan and sara are my favourite canadian indie pop groups. i started listening to pony up! because of anthea, aussies love them lol. tegan and sara are from alberta, and they are identical twins! and seriously, how cute are their music and lyrics?

some great musical groups from vancouver. woop! the new pornographers is pretty well-known among vancouverites, there are too many members i gave up trying to remember exactly how many long ago. black mountain is pretty awesome. check out pink mountaintops if you like black mountain, both lead by Stephen McBean, but pink mountaintops is more experimental.

although not from this decade, i just have to talk about neil young, he is too amazing and influential not to be mentioned. his album "harvest" is still one of my favourite albums of all time. he is a true legend, enough said.
